Darlene Cates, the American actress who played Johnny Depp and Leonardo Dicaprio's morbidly obese mother Bonnie in 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape', is looking to make her movie comeback after losing 250lbs in weight, reports the Dallas Morning News.
Almost 20 years after that movie, Cates, now 64, is feeling optimistic that she might act again after a slew of health problems. She said, "I can do moms real well. I don't have to delve very deep to find Mom in there". The actress has lost almost half her original body weight, and hopes to lose another 100lbs before appearing on-screen once again. DiCaprio earned an Oscar nomination for 'Gilbert Grape', and sent Cates a note praising her acting ability which remains one of her most cherished possessions. The actress said the note read, "I'm not really the best in expressing my words in writing but you are the most special person I have ever [met] I'll always remember you as the best acting mamma I ever had. You triumphed in your role". Cates - who is down from 575lbs to 331lbs - remains housebound but is looking to star in one or two projects a year.
For now, the actress is happy to bask in the glory of her most famous role, saying, "I can always tell when [Gilbert Grape has] been on TV.There'll be a rush of [Facebook] 'friend' requests".
