Peter, 58, announced last month (Jan17) that he will be stepping down from the Time Lord role at the end of the 10th series. Since his decision was made public, numerous names have thrown their hat into the ring to take on the part, with The Football Factory star Danny the latest, somewhat unlikely, candidate.

"I'd be interested in it. I could see myself in the scarf and all that," Danny told Britain's Daily Star newspaper.

Danny has become more famous for his small screen role in recent months, having starred in U.K. soap EastEnders as pub landlord Mick Carter since 2013. The part is perfect for Danny's Cockney accent, but the actor is sure he would be able to keep his twang if he were to be cast as the next resident of the Tardis.

"I think I could do it easy. I'd keep my accent too!" he laughed.

Other names linked to the role include Ben Whishaw and Kris Marshall. But some of Danny's fans agree that he would be the perfect successor to Peter, and have even started a petition on

"Peter Capaldi has recently announced that he will no longer continue in the role of the Time Lord," the people who started it wrote. "My understanding is that Danny Dyer has a contract with the BBC for Eastenders until October this year. Mr Dyer should then move into the position of the new Doctor."

The petition, which looks to have been set up on 2 February (17), has just three signatures to date.

The Night Manager star Olivia Colman has recently become one of the favourite names reported to be in the frame for the part, with many people agreeing that the time is right for a female Doctor.

Bookmakers Betway have slashed odds from 20/1 to 5/1, with a spokesperson for the company saying: "Since our market opened we’ve seen a wave of support for Olivia Colman to be the next Doctor Who."
