Celebrated director Danny Boyle regrets making critically mauled movie THE BEACH because he hates hippies and beaches.

Boyle admits the movie - about a controversial commune in a legendary Thai island - caused him endless problems, by damaging his credibility as a film-maker and severing his close working relationship with Ewan McGregor, who expected to be cast in the lead role only to be usurped by LEONARDO DiCAPRIO.

He complains, "If I had my time again, I'd stick to films about cities. That's something I've learned.

"I hate the countryside and nature, and I don't like hippies - I was a punk - and I found myself directing this film about hippies in a kind of paradise, a wonderland."
