Damon Albarn's opening night fears were laid to rest on Thursday (28Jun07) when his circus opera was met with a standing ovation.
The former Blur star's self-penned work Monkey: A Journey To The West premiered in Manchester, England last week, and Albarn was terrified the ambitious show would be a disaster.
Collaborator and Gorillaz bandmate Jamie Hewlett revealed, "Damon's been having a nightmare about the premiere, where he comes on stage and stops the whole thing in its tracks and tells everyone to go home."
However, the opera - a mixture of live-action circus acts and animations - had a rapturous reception at the Palace Theatre.
The show, which runs until 7 July (07), is an adaptation of an ancient Chinese legend and follows the story of The Monkey King, a hyperactive ape who gains immortality after leading a revolt against heaven.
