Cypress Hill will celebrate the 25th anniversary of their 1991 debut LP with an extravagant reissue.
The hip-hop group’s self-titled original release shot the band to stratospheric success, earning them double platinum status and becoming their second most successful album to date. Marking the milestone, the group, which is comprised of Senen Reyes (Sen Dog), Lawrence Muggerud (DJ Muggs), Louis Freese (B-Real) and Eric "Bobo" Correa, has revealed that they will be re-releasing their album in a unique way.
Dubbed the “25th Anniversary Skull”, the special edition comes in the form of a black resin sculpture inspired by the group’s signature skull logo, which can then be opened to unveil a remastered CD of their iconic debut. However, fans will need to get in quick to snap up the record, as stock will be limited to 1,991 copies. The anniversary set will also include a 100-plus-page book featuring interviews with the group about the making of the record, as well as photos taken from their archives. The project was three years in the making, according to Get On Down co-founder Papa D, who’s label will put out the revamped album.
“I thought it was a great idea; it goes along with the imagery that we’ve carried throughout the 25 years of our career,” B-Real told Rolling Stone. “I saw the first round of it and it looked incredible, man … If there’s Cypress fans out there that got, like, a Cypress Hill trophy case, keep it with all the memorabilia.”
The reissue will accompany the group’s planned anniversary tour, of which the next leg should kick off sometime around their annual Haunted Hill shows in October (16). The group, whose last record was 2010’s Rise Up, have also recently been teasing new music. In an interview with HipHopDX in February (16), B-Real revealed that the group is working on an album titled Elephants on Acid that is “pretty much in the finishing stages”.
Meanwhile, B-Real will hit the road with Prophets of Rage, his newly formed supergroup with Public Enemy’s Chuck D and DJ Lord, and Rage Against the MAChine’s Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk. The 30-plus date tour kicks off on 19 July (16) in Cleveland, Ohio.
The 25th Anniversary Skull will be available for pre-sale from 13 August (16).
