The 51-year-old musician and his spouse Sharon started experimenting with music when their children moved out, and now they are ready for the world to hear their project Pyjama Party.
He said: "We're calling ourselves the Pyjama Party. It took us by surprise, because we started off just jamming when the boys left home. It's a period that we don't know how to prepare for - suddenly you've got all this time on your hands and you have to figure out what you can do together. So we ended up playing music for fun.
"I was on drums and Sharon on bass. I'm not much of a drummer and Sharon's not much of a bassist but when we hit a groove it's fresh and different. It started out like marriage therapy and now it's turned into an album."
Neil hasn't ruled out working with his two sons - singer-songwriter Liam, 26, and Connan Mockasin drummer Elroy, 20 - in the future, with the foursome making a family album.
The guitarist - whose wife provides vocals on the next Crowded House LP, 'Intriguer' - added in an interview with the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "There's any number of family possibilities now that all my sons are fuelled and fired up; I'd love to do something with them."
