Bosses at America's NBC network have given a straight-to-series order for the new show, in which Nelson will reprise his beloved character as the head coach of a fictional college football team.

The new series will pick up 18 years after the original series' finale, and feature Nelson's retired character as the assistant coach to his adult son, who is the head of an Ivy League school's new football team.

Nelson, who recently wrapped a six-season run on critically acclaimed TV drama Parenthood, will also serve as an executive producer, and will be joined by original series creator Barry Kemp, who will return as a writer and executive producer.

Coach ran for nine seasons until 1997, and also featured Shelley Fabares and Jerry Van Dyke.
