Courtney Love broke down outside court in Los Angeles on Friday morning (20AUG04) after being slapped with a restraining order against the woman she allegedly hit with a liquor bottle.

The rocker turned up to her arraignment at Los Angeles Criminal Court early to face the felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon and pleaded not guilty.

But, in scheduling a preliminary court hearing for 7 October (04), the judge told Love she had to stay away from the alleged victim, aspiring rock star Kristin King.

Outside court, the former HOLE star cried as she told reporters, "Being in that court, and having him (the judge) say, 'The state of California vs me,' it's just scary."

Love admitted she thought the restraining order was "weird".

The case follows an incident last year (03) outside the house owned by Love's ex-boyfriend, during which she allegedly attacked a woman with a bottle.

It has been a busy week of legal wrangles for Love - on Monday (16AUG04), she was in Beverly Hills Court House for her ongoing drug possession trial, and she still faces charges in New York after allegedly hitting a fan with a microphone stand.
