Troubled rock widow Courtney Love phoned an American radio show yesterday (12FEB04) to explain why she failed to turn up to two court hearings earlier this week (ends13FEB04).

The MONO singer - who must attend court next Tuesday (17FEB04) to answer charges of drug possession and being under the influence of an illicit substance or face arrest - rambled at length to presenter Howard Stern.

The 39-year-old swore more than 15 times as she explained her reason for not attending was due to security concerns.

New York based DJ Stern tried to persuade Love to attend the hearing in Los Angeles next week.

Love ranted, "I didn't show up for court because I didn't have a professional bodyguard.

"The reason I called was that I thought I knew evil. But I didn't know its capacity. The greed out there is outrageous.

"What have I done? Other than be a woman who owns stuff and is proud of it and is arrogant about it? Why isn't the government supporting me? The DA has got it in for me and I don't know why. My house is bugged.

"This is absurd. I went to rehab for 30 days. I'm great in court. I'm good with judges. Stop it."

Love was charged with possessing the prescription painkillers oxycodone and hydrocodone in connection with a "medical emergency" that landed her in a hospital in October (03).

The widow of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain, she lost custody of her 11-year-old daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, after her arrest.

Love is expected to chat to Stern again on air today (13FEB04).
