The nightclub performer, widely known for her role in the film adaptation of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, passed away on Thursday (08Sep16) at a hospital in Savannah, Georgia.

Her close friend, Cale Hall, tells The Associated Press she had been receiving medical treatment for pneumonia in the month leading up to her death.

Born Benjamin Edward Knox, Chablis rose to fame in 1994 when writer John Berendt documented the city of Savannah and its residents in his book, focusing on Club One, where she performed.

Chablis played herself in Clint Eastwood's 1997 movie adaptation of the book. The film starred John Cusack, Kevin Spacey, and Jude Law.
