Singer Clay Aiken has landed the lead role in a new production of beloved musical Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The former American Idol runner-up can be seen wearing a flowing wig and a vibrant patchwork costume in a promotional image for the biblical production, which is running at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine from 25 August (13).

The pop star tells the Portland Press Herald newspaper, "This is a show that I have known for years. I grew up as a teenager listening to this music. I remember listening to it on a CD Walkman, so there's a little history for me with it."

His role as Joseph isn't Aiken's first job in musical theatre - he played Sir Robin in Spamalot on Broadway in 2008.
