Highlights in the collection include a purple dress and fitted overcoat worn by Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara in the 1939 classic, which is expected to fetch more than $60,000 (£37,500) in the sale.

The owner of the pieces, former hair and make-up artist Jim Tumblin, bought the dress for $20 (£13) in the 1960s. He says, "I saw this dress on the floor and they told me not to bother to pick it up because they were throwing it away."

The 150-lot collection also includes a grey suit worn by Clark Gable, a Confederate uniform donned by Leslie Howard and a script which belonged to Hattie MCDaniel, who won an Oscar for her role as Mammy.

The items will be sold on 18 April (15) in Beverly Hills, California by Heritage Auctions.
