The follow-up to the 2013 fairytale movie Snow White and The Huntsman, which stars Chris Hemsworth, Emily Blunt, Charlize Theron and Jessica Chastain earned $4.26 million (£3 million) in its first weekend (09-10Apr16) in British cinemas.

Animal animation Zootropolis moved up one place to second in the box office chart with takings of $3.41 million (£2.4 million).

There was bad news for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder however, as his superhero blockbuster plummeted from the number one spot to third place.

The film, which received scathing reviews upon its release, only earned $3.27 million (£2.3 million), less than half of what it made the previous weekend (02-03Apr16).

Despite the movie's critical mauling, bosses at Warner Bros, the film's studio, announced this week (end15Apr16) they are planning a stand-alone Batman film directed by and starring Ben Affleck.

At four is Eddie The Eagle, the bio-pic of hapless British ski-jumper Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards with ticket sales $1.85 million (£1.3 million).

Kung Fu Panda 3 was in fifth place with takings of $892,235 (£627,959).
