The Irish LADY IN RED veteran paid $53,775 (GBP29,875) at a BONHAMS auction in London for the item - which had an estimated selling price of $21,600 (GBP12,000) - tagged a "defining moment" in film history.
However, frantic bidding for the lot pushed the price up to more than double.
De Burgh says, "I bought it because I believed it was a defining moment in cinema history for its sheer horror.
"I know John Hurt very well, and of course I will give him natural visiting orders being the mother of this creature."13/07/2004 20:53
