British royal PRINCESS EUGENIE's school Marlborough College was evacuated today (09JUN05) after it was engulfed in flames.
Fire tore through a dormitory in the early hours of the morning, and although there were no serious injuries, five pupils were treated for smoke inhalation and shock.
The illustrious English institution, which counts Chris De Burgh and late poet laureate SIR JOHN BETJEMAN (corr.) as former students, prides itself on its strict fire drills, and insisted that panic had been at a minimum.
A spokeswoman for the $40,000 (GBP21,900)-a-year school says, "Everyone left the school in an orderly fashion.
"All of the staff and pupils behaved in a sensible manner and have been accounted for."
STEVE LAW of Wiltshire Fire Brigade says, "We are currently in the process of damping down the building. About 30 per cent of the roof has been lost.
"An investigation is under way into the cause of the fire."
The 15-year-old princess - the youngest daughter of PRINCE ANDREW and Sarah Ferguson, DUCHESS OF YORK - has been studying at the school of 19 months.09/06/2005 17:46
