Chaz Bono and fiancee JENNIFER ELIA have stunned the celebrity world by announcing not just the end of their engagement but the dissolution of their relationship completely. It's a particular shock given that the pair had been dating for some 12 years from 1999 and even more so given that Bono had popped the question to his long-term partner just last month.

The UK's Daily Mail reports that the news broke via a statement released by Bono's spokesperson Howard Bragman, who said "They leave this relationship with great love, respect and affection toward one another. No further amplification will be forthcoming and they ask that you respect their privacy at this time." The nature of the split is embarrassing given that Bono made his proposal on TV, as part of his show 'Being Chaz' which airs on the Oprah Winfrey Network. Responding to fans via Twitter, the son of Sonny and Cher said "Thanks for your concern about our separation. I'm doing fine, and we remain on good terms with nothing but respect and affection 4 each other."

Previously this year, Bono had highlighted his transgender issues by taking part in this year's 'Dancing With The Stars' - a brave performance that was particularly risky for the star, coming four years into his transition from female to male - something his girlfriend had managed to stay supportive of.
