Actress Charlotte Rae has opened up about the moment she first realised her husband of 25 years, composer John Strauss, was gay.

The Facts of Life star married Strauss in 1950 and they went on to have two children before divorcing in 1975, a short time after the Grammy Award winner confessed to having an affair with another man.

And in her new memoir, The Facts of My Life, Rae reveals she was heartbroken when she learned the truth about his sexuality.

In an excerpt, obtained by the New York Post, she writes, "First came the shock of what he had done behind my back, then the sting of being deceived for years. All I could feel was the betrayal and, worse than that, my shame...

"John's secret confirmed my feelings of inferiority. That I was less than a woman... That I didn't deserve to be loved and valued."

The Tv veteran also discusses her time working on the hit U.S. sitcom and portraying Edna Garrett in Diff'rent Strokes.
