Film bosses are offering U.S. troops and veterans the chance to watch Channing Tatum's new action thriller White House Down for free on the Fourth of July.

Current and former personnel will be able to take advantage of the offer on Thursday (04July13), which is Independence Day in the U.S., by showing their military identification.

Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Pictures, says, "We think White House Down is the summer's best action movie. (Seeing White House Down) is a great way to celebrate the holiday and to honour and thank the troops for their service to our country."

The movie stars Tatum as a Capitol policeman who saves the president, played by Jamie Foxx, when the White House is overrun by a paramilitary group. It debuted in fourth place at the U.S. box office over the weekend (28-30Jun13), taking $25.7 million (£16.6 million) in ticket sales.
