The 56-year-old was a regular contributor on the ITV lunchtime show between 2003 and 2013. Now TV veteran Carol insists she doesn't know why bosses made the decision to give former glamour model Katie a chance on the show.

She added that Katie's prolific Twitter presence probably landed her the job.

"I don’t know what she’s doing there," Carol said, according to the Daily Mirror newspaper. But she’s got a lot of Twitter followers, and they’re desperate for viewers. I can’t believe those women are sitting with her.

“Where’s their self-respect? That’s why the show is so different, because they’re going for people with a lot of fans."

Since joining the panel in January (16) Katie has been at the centre of controversy on the show. She recently hit headlines after saying she would have aborted her son Harvey if she had known about him having rare genetic condition, Prader-Willi syndrome.

Katie said: "I was young when I had Harvey and I admit it, that if I knew he was blind before I had him, as harsh as it sounds, I probably would have aborted him, because to me it's like, 'Oh my God, it's blind, how would I cope?'. I know it sounds harsh."

Katie later took to Twitter to defend her comments, writing: "I'm really upset people have taken out of context what I said on @loosewomen today. Harvey is my life and I am so proud of him!"

Katie is just one of the new panellists on the show, with former Geordie Shore and I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! star Vicky Pattison another recent acquisition.

Former The Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain has also made frequent appearances on the programme.
