Carly Simon is refusing to name the subject of her biggest hit YOU'RE SO VAIN, despite calls suggesting it's time to tell all following the recent revelation that FBI official MARK FELT sparked the RICHARD NIXON Watergate scandal.
Felt was exposed as the mysterious man WASHINGTON POST journalists BOB WOODWARD and CARL BERNSTEIN called DEEP THROAT earlier this week (beg30MAY05), and now music experts feel Simon should solve another big 1970s mystery - who was the ex-lover behind the scathing song.
But, unlike the journalists who broke the Watergate scandal - who insisted they'd only reveal the identity of Deep Throat upon his death - Simon insists she'll take her mystery man to the grave with her.
She says, "I don't see why I ever would (reveal the identity). What would it advance?
"I wrote that song in the days when people kept confidences to themselves, whereas now, people expose them so easily and readily for the benefit of their next movie sale."
Simon has only teased that the subject of the 1973 hit has the letters A, E and R in his name, leading fans to suggest either Warren Beatty or MICK JAGGER, who sings backing vocals on the song, is the mystery man.03/06/2005 09:16
