A free Carlos Santana concert to mark the centennial of the 1906 San Francisco, California earthquake has been cancelled, after organisers failed to raise enough funds.

The Mexican singer, 58, offered to perform for free at the 22 April (06) gig, but the concert's producers admit separate costs propelled the bill to over $1.5 million (GBP880,000).

San Francisco Mayor GAVIN NEWSOM is hopeful the city can mark the 100th anniversary of the 18 April 1906 quake, which measured 7.8 on the Richter scale and killed an estimated 3,000-6,000 people, later this year (06).

Newsom says, "It will be even bigger and better than what we had been planning."
