This year's (03) Cannes Film Festival in France has been a disaster - according to Hollywood insiders.

Sources at the French cinema extravaganza claim the quality of films on offer this year (03) is so poor the first deal by a Hollywood studio has only just been made, three days before the end of the event and there has been little enthusiasm among American film bosses.

Standouts at the event include Ewan McGregor's Young Adam, Nicole Kidman's DOGVILLE and little-known love yarn JAPANESE STORY - which has just been snapped up by SAMUEL GOLDWIN FILMS.

SONY PICTURES president TOM BERNARD says, "There's nothing really hot that's in the festival. At least there is nothing obvious out there, although something may come out of left field and turn into a big bidding war."
