Cameron Douglas' girlfriend has walked free from prison after a New York judge sentenced her to time served for attempting to smuggle drugs to the troubled actor.
Kelly Sott, 31, was taken into police custody in August (09) after she was caught attempting to hand over methamphetamine, hidden in an electric toothbrush, to Michael Douglas' 32-year-old son while he was under house arrest at his mother Diandra Douglas' Manhattan apartment.
Police subsequently found a stash of heroin, crystal meth and marijuana when they searched the room she had shared with Douglas at the city's Hotel Gansevoort.
Last month (Feb10), Sott pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour charge of possessing methamphetamine.
She faced up to a year in prison for the crime but during her sentencing in Manhattan federal court on Tuesday (16Mar10), the judge agreed to set her free after she revealed her seven months in jail had helped her to sober up.
She told the court, "I learned a good lesson. I just want to leave all that behind me - the drugs. ...Thank you for giving me a second chance."
However, as part of her punishment, Sott has been ordered to undergo a year-long drug treatment and counselling programme upon her return to her home in Pennsylvania.
Cameron Douglas faces a minimum 10-year prison term when he is sentenced for drug trafficking charges on 27 April (10).
Reports suggest the It Runs In The Family star had been plotting to move approximately $18,000 (£12,000)-worth of crystal meth from California to New York to sell when an undercover informant alerted the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration of Douglas' involvement.
He pleaded guilty to possessing methamphetamines with intent to distribute during a hearing in January (10).
