Director Hal Needham used four Pontiac Firebird Trans Am vehicles during the shoot for Burt Reynolds' 1977 action comedy, but they all suffered severe damage from high-speed chase scenes and were subsequently destroyed.

Another identical model was kept aside by Universal Studios bosses solely to promote the film, and it was originally sold for $450,000 (£300,000) last year (14).

Prior to the sale, it hadn't been driven in almost 30 years, but the new owner had it restored by experts at the MCLaughlin Museum, and now it is heading to the auction block once more.

The car has also been autographed by Reynolds, who is due to attend the auction at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona on 30 January (16) to hand the keys over to the winning bidder.
