Bruce Springsteen stunned music fans in his native Asbury Park, New Jersey at the weekend (02Apr10) with a surprise show at the town's Wonder Bar.
The Boss attended a panel discussion on the local music scene at the Atonement Lutheran Church on Saturday afternoon before joining pals 'Southside' Johnny Lyon, Bobby Thomas and singer Nicky Addeo for a covers set across the road that evening.
The impromptu concert also marked a reunion of sorts - it was the first time Springsteen had shared a stage with former E Street Band drummer Vini Lopez since he was fired from the star's backing band in the mid-1970s.
The gig came days after a letter from Springsteen was published in the Asbury Park Press.
In the note to the editor, the rocker commented on an article about budget cuts and the impoverished, writing, "The article is one of the few that highlights the contradictions between a policy of large tax cuts, on the one hand, and cuts in services to those in the most dire conditions, on the other."
