Netflix and Redbox customers do not appear to be overly concerned over Netflix's deals with 20th Century Fox, Universal, and Warner Bros. that will force them to wait four weeks after the studios' movies are released on DVD and Blu-ray before they can be rented. According to Eric Wold, an analyst with Merriman Curhan Ford, price and convenience trump earlier access. In a note to clients on Monday, Wold wrote (as reported by Home Media magazine) "We continue to believe that most consumers will wait the 28 days (choosing a different movie for now) in order to obtain the much lower pricing of Redbox and/or Netflix after the window passes." Moreover, Wold downplayed any advantage that Blockbuster may enjoy in the battle with its major rivals. (Blockbuster will continue to rent movies on DVD and Blu-ray beginning the same day they are released.) But he indicated that a beneficiary may be video-on-demand cable and Internet sites -- many of which offer the studios' movies on the same day that hit retailers' shelves.
