Britney Spears' release from a Los Angeles medical facility has sparked strong objection from her parents Lynne and James, who believe her life is at risk.
The singer left the UCLA medical centre on Wednesday accompanied by a private security detail and left the hospital in a car driven by her on-off boyfriend Adnan Ghalib.
Britney had been admitted to hospital on January 31st, with an initial 72-hour holding order extended to 14 days on the recommendation of a psychiatrist.
But she has been released early after a court representative ruled there was "no just cause" for the star to be held, according to People magazine.
In a joint statement issued to CNN presenter Anderson Cooper, Britney's parents have strongly criticised the decision that allowed their daughter to be released.
"As parents of an adult child in the throes of a mental health crisis, we were extremely disappointed this morning to learn that over the recommendation of her treating psychiatrist, our daughter Britney was released from the hospital that could best care for her and keep her safe," the statement read.
"We are deeply concerned about our daughter's safety and vulnerability and we believe her life is presently at risk. There are conservatorship orders in place created to protect our daughter that are being blatantly disregarded."
Britney's father James and an attorney were given temporary conservatorship of her estate at the weekend, after superior court commissioner Reva Goetz ruled the 26-year-old was incapable of caring for herself or her affairs.
The statement added: "We ask only that the court's orders be enforced so that a tragedy may be averted."
The Los Angeles Times newspaper has claimed the Toxic star is to seek additional treatment.
Britney's manager and confidante Sam Lufti played no part in her release from hospital, after he was hit with a restraining order this week.
The order followed claims from Lynne Spears that Lufti had drugged and verbally abused Britney.
