Britney Spears' two marriages in 2004 have been crowned the pop world's most sensational stories of 2004.

The TOXIC singer stunned fans and family when she spontaneously wed school pal Jason Alexander in a Las Vegas chapel in January, only to have the union annulled 55 hours later.

Spears grabbed headlines again in September when she secretly wed her boyfriend Kevin Federline in Los Angeles.

And nearly 40 per cent of visitors to gossip website POPDIRT.COM agreed Spears should be awarded the top spot in a list of the biggest entertainment news stories of the past 12 months.

The pop babe beat out competition from Janet Jackson's Super Bowl breast exposure and allegations Nick Carter attacked his then-girlfriend PARIS HILTON.

The top five stories of 2004 in pop music are:

1. BRITNEY SPEARS' two marriages (39.87 per cent) 2. JANET JACKSON's SUPER BOWL breast flash (29.36 per cent) 3. NICK CARTER allegedly assaulting Paris Hilton (8.43 per cent) 4. Michael Jackson's molestation case (7.79 per cent)

5. Ashlee Simpson's Saturday Night Live lip-synching (5.66 per cent).
