Britney Spears has made a $50,000 (GBP27,700) donation to a cancer charity named after late comedienne Gilda Radner.

The pregnant pop star, whose first child with husband Kevin Federline is due later this year (05), has handed the cash over to GILDA'S CLUB WORLDWIDE, whose network of free cancer support communities throughout North America helps patients with the disease.

Spears says in a statement: "When children have cancer, or when their parents or siblings have the disease, there are few places they can turn to for support.

"Gilda's Club is one of those places. I passionately believe in helping children in need, and so I am very happy to make this gift to help children learn they can cope with what can be a terrible and devastating experience for them."

The money will go directly to the Super Days program at Gilda's Clubs. Super Days are day-long programs of arts, crafts, and other activities that support children who are living with cancer to help them understand the disease and to express their thoughts, feelings, fears and questions about it.

Radner died of ovarian cancer in 1989.
