Britney Spears has been granted more time with her children after a Los Angeles court hearing over her custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

The court, which temporarily granted full custody to Federline, permitted the troubled singer to have overnight visits with her children.

Spears will now be able to visit her two sons once a week in the presence of a court-appointed monitor.

Speaking to People magazine, Spears' attorney Sorrell Trope said: "I consider this a very positive sign for my client. I have every expectation that she will comply with all the orders made by the court. I remain absolutely optimistic that she will eventually regain 50-50 custody."

The judge presiding in the case, Scott Gordon, has previously ordered the singer to appear for random drug tests and to attend parenting and counselling sessions to address her substance abuse problems.

During the hearing, he said that the Baby One More Time star's time with her children had been limited in the past due to her "conscious choice" to not comply with the court's directives.

Another hearing is scheduled for October 26th to review the situation regarding the custody of Spears' sons.

Meanwhile the star was recently charged with misdemeanour hit-and-run, for driving without a valid licence. She could face up to six months in jail and be forced to pay a $1,000 (£500) fine if convicted.

The judge in her driving case ordered that the star be booked over the offence and Spears will appear at a Police station to have mug shots and fingerprints taken. She has also been ordered to appear at the court on October 25th, a day before her custody hearing.

Since splitting with Federline last November Spears' eccentric behaviour has led to a barrage of headlines about her emotional state, while the singer was also dropped by her management last month after a disastrous comeback performance at the MTV video music awards.

Spears recently completed filming the video for Gimme More, the lead single from her new album Blackout - her fifth since the smash-hit Baby One More Time was released in 1998.
