British Sea Power
British Sea Power release the new single 'Waving Flags' through Rough Trade Records on January 7th 2008.
'Waving Flags' is the first single proper from BSP's forthcoming 3rd album, Do You Like Rock Music? It's a track already exalted skyward by The Guardian: "Mark my words, this monstrous Arcade Fire-style explosion of heart-shattering reverb, battle-cry drums and choral melody will be the festival song of 2008."
Such reference to the magnificent Canadians of Arcade Fire is interesting here. Following the release of BSP's debut album in 2003 and before his own first album, Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler would attend BSP shows in Canada. Such notions of congress and confluence across nations and across oceans are appropriate to the 'Waving Flags' single. However, it's to the East that this track directs its gaze.
In gorgeously uplifting style, 'Waving Flags' alludes to nationalism, sport and quality lager. There are passing references to Slavia Prague FC, Poland's River Vistula and the Austrian actress Hedy Lamarr, who made did groundbreaking work for on-screen nudity in the 1933 Czech film Ecstasy. The overall effect is a glorious rush of collective cross-border euphoria - one that suggests we aren't here for long, so let's have a drink. And that if people are coming to this place from that place, let us be glad they're not arriving on the back of a tank.
