British rocker and astrophysicist Brian May has joined a group of scientists to raise awareness about the potential future threat of asteroids striking Earth.

The Queen guitarist and former astronaut Ed Lu, ethologist Richard Dawkins and Tv scientist Bill Nye recently released the 100X Asteroid Declaration, calling for the creation of an asteroid detection system to "solve humanity's greatest challenges to safeguard our families and quality of life on Earth in the future".

They are also calling for Asteroid Day to take place on 30 June (15) to mark the last major asteroid impact near Tunguska, Siberia in 1908, according to Billboard.com.

May says, "The more we learn about asteroid impacts, the clearer it becomes that the human race has been living on borrowed time.

"We are currently aware of less than one per cent of objects comparable to the one that impacted at Tunguska, and nobody knows when the next big one will hit. It takes just one."
