BRET MICHAELS, the American rocker and former front-man of the band Poison, is recovering in the intensive care unit at St Joseph's Hospital and Medical Centre in Phoenix, Arizona, after undergoing successful heart surgery, reports the Toronto Sun. Doctors discovered that the 47-year-old had a "hole in his heart" when they treated him for a brain haemorrhage last year, and he underwent the operation yesterday (24th January 2011).
Michaels' fiancee KRISTI GIBSON and his two daughters had waited at the hospital for news of the surgery, and they were told yesterday that everything had gone to plan. A spokesperson for the rocker said, "Bret Michaels underwent a successful heart procedure today at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix. Michaels is currently recuperating at St. Joseph's where he remains for observation in ICU". The musician has endured a number of health issues in recent years, and he had an emergency appendectomy last April, before suffering a mini stroke in May.
The former POISON singer, who proposed to his long-term girlfriend Kristi over the Christmas period, took his mind off the operation by attending a classic car auction on Saturday (22nd January 2011). Whilst at the event he told the Arizona Republic that he felt confident ahead of the surgery, saying, "Barring any complications, I should be out within three to four days".
