Bradley Cooper's star turn in The Elephant Man has been hailed a huge success after the production broke even in less than seven weeks on Broadway.

The Hangover star won rave reviews for his portrayal of severely deformed John Merrick in the Bernard Pomerance play after it opened at the Booth Theatre in New York on 7 December (14), and now it has cemented its status as a huge box office draw .

The production broke even in just six and a half weeks, recouping its $3.1 million (£1.9 million) costs, and it has now brought in a total of $7.1 million (£4.4 million) up to 28 December (14), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Elephant Man also became the first show to gross more than $1 million (£625,000) in a single week at the Booth Theatre. It runs until 22 February (15).
