The Hangover star is up for the Best Leading Actor in a Play for his portrayal of disfigured Englishman John Merrick in The Elephant Man, while British actresses Mirren and Mulligan will compete for Best Leading Actress in a Play for The Audience and Skylight respectively.

The nominations come just days after all three landed nods for Drama Desk and New York Drama League awards.

Cooper will go up against actors including Bill Nighy (Skylight), Ben Miles (Wolf Halls Part One & Two), and Alex Sharp (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), while Mirren and Mulligan will compete with Mad Men star Elisabeth Moss (The Heidi Chronicles), fellow Brit Ruth Wilson (Constellations), and Geneva Carr (Hand to God).

Skylight and The Elephant Man are up for Best Revival of a Play, and Sting earned a nomination for Best Score for his troubled production The Last Ship, which closed in January (15) due to poor ticket sales. The musical also received a nod for Best Orchestrations.

Other key nominations include Kristin Chenoweth for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for On the Twentieth Century, Japanese actor Ken Watanabe for his role in musical The King and I, and veteran actress Patricia Clarkson for her featured role in The Elephant Man.

Musicals An American in Paris and Fun Home lead the nominations list with 12 mentions each.

The winners will be announced at the 69th annual ceremony at Radio City Music Hall in New York on 7 June (15), hosted by Tony Award winners Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth.
