Brad Pitt has walked away from an upcoming movie about Biblical villain Pontius Pilate.

The Fury star had been attached to portray the Roman governor who ordered Jesus' crucifixion in the movie of the same name, but he has since pulled out of the project, according to Deadline.com.

Meanwhile, the film will no longer be produced by Warner Bros. executives and is reportedly expected to find a new home at the company's former boss Jeff Robinov's new Studio 8 firm.

New casting details for Pontius Pilate, based on a script from Woman On Top screenwriter Vera Blasi, have yet to be revealed.

The religious figure is also heading to the big screen in the planned 2016 remake of Ben-Hur, with former Game of Thrones actor Pedro Pascal in talks to portray Pilate.
