Pitt and his Plan B company will produce the project while Tony winner Kushner, who penned Steven Spielberg's Lincoln and AIDS drama Angels in America, will adapt the book by Mimi Baird and Eve Claxton.

He Wanted the Moon: The Madness and Medical Genius of Dr. Perry Baird and His Daughter's Quest to Know Him, is a memoir as told by Mimi, the daughter of Dr. Baird. In the tome, she tells the story of her father's battle with depression, as he suffered through dangerous treatments such as being straightjacketed and lobotomised to help "cure" his mental illness in the 1930s and 1940s.

Mimi also recounts her own fight to help get her father the overdue credit she believed he deserved from the scientific community, as well as her efforts to give a voice to those dealing with mental illness.
