British pop star Boy George dodged a five and a half year prison sentence today (08MAR06), after a New York City court dropped charges of cocaine possession against him. During the hearing at Manhattan Criminal Court, the former CULTURE CLUB singer - real name GEORGE O'DOWD - pleaded guilty to wasting police time by falsely reporting a burglary last year (OCT05). The troubled 44-year-old was sentenced to five days of community service and fined $1,000 (GBP575). He must also pay court costs of $160 (GBP91) and has been ordered to attend a drug rehabilitation programme. O'Dowd says, "I am relieved and happy that this case has been disposed of. "I love New York and I'm looking forward to coming back and working in the States later this year (06)." O'Dowd was arrested at his Manhattan home on 7 October (05) after police found 13 bags of cocaine following a burglary call to the apartment. The singer's lawyer LOU FREEMAN maintained that many people had attended a party at the apartment and that his client didn't know who owned the drug.
