Irish rocker Bono has spoken of how the death of his father inspired him to take up art.

The U2 frontman - who yesterday (06OCT03) spoke at the opening of his first exhibition at CHRISTIE'S in London - says his dad BOB HEWSON's passing after a struggle with cancer led him to drawing.

He says, "When my dad was dying, I was touring and would go back to him each night and sleep beside him.

"That was when I first started drawing. It allowed me to express myself in ways that music and words can't."
