U2 singer Bono makes a far better neighbour that Madonna, according to residents of a super-exclusive New York apartment building.

The ELEVATION star had to pass a series of rigorous tests and interviews staged by the building's co-operative, all aimed to decide whether he'd be suitable for the exclusive address.

Even though the tough board turned down pop queen Madonna during her 1985 wild child phase, they decided socially concerned Irishman Bono was perfectly acceptable - and now the star has laid out $16 million (GBP10 million) for his very own plush pad.

The exclusive apartment has stunning views of the city's Central Park from its classy terrace.
