Catholic rock star Bono has called on the Pope to rewrite all religious hymns, because they are too sickly sweet and an embarrassment to God.

The Irish U2 frontman claims they're dishonest and work for the devil.

He says, "If I had my say, a lot of the gospel hymns and tunes would be thrown out of the Vatican library.

"I think they're working much more for the devil. They're saccharine sugar. It's such awful music, it must be an embarrassment to the good lord. That's why I prefer the blues to gospel.

"There's an honesty there, people are owning up to their despair. That's what religion should be more like, instead of this happy clappy, 'Let's pretend we are not all afraid of dying.'"
