Irish rocker Bono has had three metal plates and 18 screws inserted into his arm after it was fractured during a bicycle accident on Sunday (16Nov14).

U2 were forced to cancel their week-long residency on U.S. Tv's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon after the frontman suffered a painful injuries during a high-speed bicycle crash in New York City.

According to Rollingstone.com, he was rushed to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and underwent five hours of surgery to his upper arm.

Doctor Dean Lorich M.D. tells the website, "The bone of his humerus (upper arm) was driven though his skin and the bone was in six different pieces. He was taken emergently (sic) to the operating room for a five-hour surgery Sunday evening where the elbow was washed out and debrided (surgically removed), a nerve trapped in the break was moved and the bone was repaired with three metal plates and 18 screws."

Bono suffered a host of other injuries including a fracture to his left eye, a fractured shoulder blade, and a cracked little finger on his left hand. He had surgery on the digit on Monday (17Nov14).

Lorich concludes, "He will require intensive and progressive therapy, however a full recovery is expected."
