A Brief History of Seven Killings was describes as the "most exciting" book on the shortlist by Michael Wood, the chairman of the judges, and James was handed the $80,000 (£50,000) cash prize at a London ceremony on Tuesday night (13Oct15), becoming the first Jamaican to win the Booker Prize.

Calling the victory "so surreal", the author dedicated the award to his late father.

James beat fellow shortlisted writers Sunjeev Sahota, Chigozie Obioma, Hanya Yanagihara, Anne Tyler and Tom MCCarthy.
