July's (05) worldwide Live 8 concerts have generated a $12 million (GBP6.6 million) surplus - even though they weren't intended to be fundraisers.

The series of supergigs, organised by SIR Bob Geldof, were organised to put pressure on leaders of the world's eight richest countries to double aid to developing countries by 2010.

But the shows have also generated cash, with EMI Music's DVD rights to the concerts pulling in $6 million (GBP3.3 million) and main sponsors Nokia and AOL each providing $5 million (GBP2.7 million).

Proceeds will go to the Band Aid Trust.
