SIR Bob Geldof has dismissed the popular perception of the 1980s as a self-centred decade - because he managed to persuade so many stars to contribute to the original Band Aid charity single DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS?.

The former BOOMTOWN RATS singer persuaded celebrities including GEORGE MICHAEL and Boy George into singing on the 1984 fundraising track.

Geldof says, "This was supposed to be the 'me, me, me' 1980s, but it was actually a very selfless time.

"Take an archetypical 1980s figure like Boy George - a cool guy, having his gay affairs and drugs, staying in mega-hotels. He could have said no. But he flew home on Concorde and did the right thing."
