Blur bassist Alex James' bid to join Britain's Glastonbury Festival crowd nearly ended in humiliation, because security refused to let him enter without a pass.

The BEETLEBUM musician - who headlined the legendary event with his band in 1998 - was convinced his star status would qualify him for automatic entry, but was forced to beg his way inside for yesterday's (25JUN04) opening day.

A source says, "Alex wasn't here to perform. He just arrived with some mates and expected to get in.

"He assumed because he's in Blur there'd be no problem. But security is so tight this year that everyone needs a pass.

"He was almost left red-faced but finally blagged his way in."
