The event, which featured Bloc Party, Foals and Disclosure on the line-up, was due to run from Friday (08Jan16) to Sunday (10Jan16) but was axed the night before it opened after organisers ruled the bush fires nearby compromised access roads to the Busselton site.

They wrote in a post on the website, "It is with great regret that we have to announce the cancellation of Southbound 2016, due to the fire situation in the festivals (sic) surrounding areas. After ongoing communications and information provided from the West Australian Police, Main Roads Department and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, we have no option but to cancel this year's event. We cannot compromise patron safety and proceed knowing people's lives are at risk getting to the event."

Fires in the area started on Wednesday (06Jan16) and were upgraded to emergency status on Thursday (07Jan16), leaving organisers with "no time to relocate prior to gates opening".

Bloc Party promised fans they would try to organise a replacement gig for fans in Perth, 140 miles (222 kilometres) away from the site, writing on Twitter.com, "Perth we were sad that @SouthboundWA had to be cancelled, our thoughts are with everyone affected by the bushfires in Western Australia... Needless to say though, we are working on something for you. Watch this space and keep Sunday night free."

This is the second Australian festival to be affected by bushfires in recent months. The Falls Music & Arts Festival in Victoria was relocated in December (15) after a blaze broke out near its original site.
