Country star Blake Shelton struggled through reality Tv show The Voice in America on Monday (20May13) after learning of the devastation caused by tornadoes in his native Oklahoma.

More than 20 people have been confirmed dead after storms ripped through the suburbs of Oklahoma City, not far from where Shelton and his wife Miranda Lambert live.

Although his property was never under threat, the singer admits he was floored by the news footage of the damage left in the wake of the storm and he spent hours trying to reach family and friends to make sure they were Ok.

At the top of Monday's show he said, "They're going through hell there right now. When we went live here (in Los Angeles), I finally set my phone down. The bad news keeps coming in. A lot of fatalities, a lot of children and it makes it hard to actually sit here and do this tonight, but I've got a job to do and the team's counting on me, so here I am."
