The Piano Man star became the first artist to play 65 shows at the Manhattan arena, breaking a previous record set by Sir Elton John for performing the most headline concerts there.

The triumph was celebrated by hanging a banner from the rafters, a tradition which honours the venue's heroes, joining another celebratory flag which marks Joel's record for playing the most consecutive performances at Madison Square Garden. That record stands at 19.

During the show, Joel paid tribute to his longtime friend Sir Elton, who he has previously toured with, by singing his track Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
