A recording of the Billy Elliot stage show has beaten Denzel Washington's new thriller The Equalizer to the top spot in the U.K box office chart.

The beloved British theatre production, based on the 2000 film starring Jamie Bell, stormed U.K. cinemas this weekend (26-28Sep14), bringing in $3 million (£1.9 million).

The feat put the filmed stage show narrowly ahead of Washington's Hollywood blockbuster which took just $22,323 (£13,952) less.

After two weekends at the top, fantasy-comedy The Boxtrolls moved down to number three with sales of $1.8 million (£1.1 million).

British comedy What We Did On Our Holiday entered the chart at number four, netting $1.3 million ($810,000), while Liam Neeson's A Walk Among Tombstones dropped from second to fifth place with sales of $960,000 ($600,000).
